Life Fit meeting the needs of young people with disabilities

A community-based programme run by Life Unlimited (now known as Your Way | Kia Roha) in Hamilton seems to be ticking all the right boxes for its participants, says Idea Services team leader Sarah Edworthy.

Life Fit is a fitness, exercise, and health programme open to anyone but also supports people aged 15 plus who have an intellectual disability and/or mental illness.

The youth group from Idea Services, a subsidiary of IHC, accesses the programme weekly at Perry Tennis Centre.

“Our people are benefiting both physically and mentally,” says Sarah.

“The programme is affordable for people on a benefit and the young people love doing it as it challenges them on a weekly basis.

“They have made new friends who they enjoy seeing weekly and even have little competitions between themselves.”

The programme supports fitness and health goals and aims to encourage participants to live an active and healthy lifestyle.

Life Unlimited staff coordinate the programme and have the support of a qualified personal trainer.

To participate in the programme, contact Your Way | Kia Roha

IHC runs a volunteer programme set up to assist people with intellectual disabilities to make friends. An IHC volunteer is a friend and someone to go out and have fun with. IHC volunteers do not help with doctors’ visits, house work or office work.

Having an IHC volunteer is about doing something together or learning how to do something new.
If this sounds like something you or a loved one would be interested in then all you need to do is contact your volunteer coordinator.
If you would like to be a volunteer for IHC and be a part of this amazing programme and a friend to someone with an intellectual disability call 0800 442442 or visit  their website.
