Fitness, friends, and fun: Gaining strength and community at the gym

Twice a week at local gym Latitude 39 in New Plymouth, people of all ages and physical abilities get together to exercise, laugh, and make friends.  This class is for people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) or those who have had a stroke, but everyone is welcome.

The class has just had its first birthday party.  That’s one whole year of people getting stronger, feeling better, and making new friends.

A group of about 30 people, including a baby and people in their 70s, are gathered together in Latitude 39 gym to celebrate one year of a strength and conditioning class for people with MS or who have had a stroke.

How did it all start?  Nichola from Your Way | Kia Roha and Kelly from MS Taranaki saw that people wanted a way to stay healthy and meet others.  They talked to Jeremy, who owns the gym.  Jeremy loved the idea, and the class began.

At first, four people came.  Now, about 12 people join each class.  Nearly 30 people came to celebrate the birthday!  Warren goes to the class twice a week.  He says it helps him a lot.

“It’s easier for me to get around now,” he says.  “Even getting out of my chair is better.  I love coming here.  It’s more fun than the exercises I used to do, and I’ve made great friends.”  Jeremy, the gym owner, says the class isn’t just about exercise. – It’s about getting stronger, breathing better, and improving balance.  But it’s also about making friends and having fun.

The best part?  Anyone can join in:

  • You can exercise sitting down or standing up
  • You can bring someone to support you

People who come to the class say they feel better and find everyday tasks easier.  They enjoy coming and meeting friends.
