Hearing loss awareness: Understanding the emotional impact

Winter can be tough, especially if you’re dealing with hearing loss.  It might trigger feelings of isolation, loneliness, anxiety, or even depression.  This could have a significant impact on your mental wellbeing.

Did you know that untreated hearing loss increases the likelihood of depression in older adults by 40%?  This emphasises the importance of addressing this issue early on.  Our ability to hear plays a crucial role in communication and maintaining healthy relationships.  When our hearing is affected, our brain has to work harder to cope with day-to-day life and our mental sharpness may be affected.

Navigating hearing loss daily can be draining.  At times, it may seem easier to avoid social gatherings, like parties or dinners with friends due to the challenges of hearing in noisy environments.  This avoidance can increase feelings of loneliness and sadness.

If you or someone you care about is struggling with hearing loss, it’s important to do something about it.

Here are some things you can try:

Talk to your family or friends:

Don’t keep your hearing struggles to yourself.  Sharing what’s going on can help your loved ones understand and support you better.  They can learn how to talk to you in a way that makes it easier for you to hear.

Visit a hearing clinic:

Places like Your Way | Kia Roha Hearing Therapy clinics have experts who can figure out what’s going on with your hearing and help you find the best way to manage it.

Remember, hearing loss is not a barrier to living your best life.  There is support available to help you along the way.  Don’t let hearing loss hold you back – reach out and get the help you need to feel good again.
