If your needs can’t be met by your own income or government-funded services, here are some organisations and charities that may be able to help.
Generosity New Zealand allows subscribers to find funding opportunities through their databases. However, you may be able to access these databases for free at your local library.
The Halberg AllSports Activity Fund provides grants to young people whose primary barrier to participate in sport or physical recreation is due to a physical impairment.
CCS Disability administers two trusts which provide support for disabled people. The Jubilee Trust offers a general grant, education grants and organisational grants to assist people with physical disabilities living in Auckland, Northland and the Eastern Bay of Plenty. The Cook Opie provides grants for the purchase of computer and technical equipment that will assist people with physical disabilities.
The Wilson Home Trust offers a range of grants to enhance the life of a child or young person who has a disability, and their family. Grants are available for things like equipment and activities, holidays or counselling.
The Blind Foundation administers a number of funds that provide additional financial assistance and support to people who are blind or have low vision.
Lottery Grants are available to people with mobility or communication related disabilities. Grants can be used to buy communication equipment, a vehicle or mobility scooter, or to modify a vehicle to meet your needs.
Variety fund a broad range of requirements, from much-needed medical or mobility equipment, to providing basic essentials for Kiwi kids in need. Specialised grants and scholarships meet a wide range of needs for children aged 0-18 years and also offer support to organisations that assist children.
The Cerebral Palsy Society of New Zealand provides grants to assist people with Cerebral Palsy to get items or services that improve their independence and quality of life.
The Mazda Foundation Trust provides assistance to a range of worthy charitable entities, causes and individuals throughout New Zealand
The J R McKenzie Youth Education Fund aims to assist youth, particularly in cases where bereavement, sickness or family disturbances leave the children in need of assistance if they are to continue their studies. Special grants are available, particularly for glasses or to help students with special needs.
Funding for organisations
The IHC Foundation makes grants to organisations with initiatives that promote and support the health and wellbeing of people with intellectual disability.
J R McKenzie Trust grants focus on working towards a more socially just and inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand, with particular focus on Maori development and disadvantaged children and their families. Applications with a focus on other especially marginalised groups may also be considered.
